17th Century English Mortuary Hilted Broadsword,
16C blade, (sold) |
A good 17th Century English mortuary hilted broadsword with 16th
Century Passau blade.

A rare mortuary hilted English broadsword with 16C Passau Wolf
markings to blade, plus "J H J H J H" (possibly "I
H I H I H") almost certainly for Johann Hoppe, a top blade
smith in Passau in 1520.

The 38 inch blade most likely indicates this sword was carried
by a cavalry officer. It is worn but still very sound and quite
firm in the hilt. The hilt again is aged but overall, some small
holes from earlier rust, but overall still sound and in original
form. The leather bound grip is a later replacement.
A very rare sword with a rarer blade. My reference number is 906.
