No maker’s / retailer’s name to the ricasso / forte (typical for a war time sword bought through an army outfitters), but with the officer’ name, regiment (abbreviation) and date; “W H Castle, 7th R.F., 17-5-15”. The army list confirms W H Castle was confirmed as a second lieutenant in the Royal Fusiliers that year. As no officer with that surname and initials is recorded as killed, he obviously made it through the war. It appears that he may have been a machine gunner.

The 32 5/8 inch blade is well etched and in good condition, plus firm in the hilt / grip. The plated steel guard with a fine dusting of plating corrosion tiny bubbles is very good. The hilt general with some light corrosion is still good. The black fishskin grip in very good condition, as are the associated twisted grip wire bindings. Original sword knot with age and surface leather cracks is still sound to good. The leather field service scabbard is dry (leather balsam maybe a good idea) but good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Identified officer and regiment sword in VGC, its got to be well worth £550. Please quote item reference ZZ67. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 103x18x17 (1.808)
