Not the best condition sword we have listed (but look at the price we are selling it for further below), but it is a rare WW1 Welsh Guards sword with officer’s (or maybe family member donor’s) initials, “P S A”. Etched to / sold by renowned guards outfitters, E. Smith 5 Boyle St, Saville Row W (London). We bought this as a research project but got nowhere. The lack of battle honours to the blade means this is pre-1919 when WW1 battle honours were awarded. But we have researched the Army list for 1915 to 1919 (the Welsh Guards were formed in 1915), but no officer shown with those initials. It can not be a post 1919 officer because of the fact there are no battle honours etched to the blade.
The 32 inch slim dress weight blade has plating loss and multiple rust patches is firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard in similar condition to the blade. The fishskin grip mostly good but with small patches of wear and some loss. The twisted grip wire bindings are tarnished but appear good. The leather field service sword knot has lost its acorn. The leather field service scabbard with steel fittings is aged (leather scuffed and tatty in places, fittings with small rust spots and wear). The sword sheathes and draws well.
