A levee (slim dress weight) bladed 1845 pattern (folding guard, fullered blade) British infantry officer’s sword with etched panel “W R” (the officer’s initials) over “17th Regt” (for The Royal Leicestershire Regiment). As the solid guard 1854P soon superseded this pattern, it is probably an easy enough matter to identify the officer in “Harts Army Lists” for 1845 to 1854. No maker’s or retailer’s name etched to the ricasso.
The 32 inch blade is in good condition, some patina patches, the etching still clear, blade firm in the hilt. The brass hilt with damage (dents) which is common for these frail guards (looked pretty but lousy in defence, and has come away slightly from pommel’s earlier brazed repair of the same; but it still looks quite good and is sound. The steel scabbard is good but with wear / age / minor dings. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A regimental etched sword with owners initials is therefore a likely research able bargain at just was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference ZZ03. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1642-100x15x14 (1.105)
