Super rare? Just Google and see if you can find another. An XIII trooper swords are quite common, but officer’s swords are a totally different thing.
Blade marked to quality Solingen maker Schnitzer et Kirchbaum. Hilt / guard marked to famous quality gun maker family “YBARZABAL” (please note: we are sure the hilt / guard was made at Versailles but under special purchase contract with Ybarzabal).
The scabbard is original (there are signs of genuine age around the chape) but it has been bright cleaned; the leather scabbard panels may be original or may be replacements, it is hard to tell (we feel 51% they are original panels). The grip surface is not original, nor are the twisted grip wire bindings; you can see the original twine over the base wood (the twine used to create the grip undulations) marks through the replacement leather. It may be possible to find a skilled leather crafts person who could more closely match the original grip. Otherwise, the sword is original / authentic, guaranteed.
The blade has the remains of its once vibrant blue and gilt etchings, and its original hatchet point; only troopers swords were directed to convert to spear point (a field modification).
The almighty 38 3/16 is in good condition and firm in the hilt / guard / grip. The hilt / guard with some signs of active field service but is good nonetheless. The replacement grip is, well, there. The brass and leather panel inserts scabbard is in very good condition. The sword sheathes and draws well.
