This sword was the property of William Norman Helme (1895-1951), who was a Second Lieutenant, Land Forces, Machine Gun Corps. He was commissioned as an officer on 10 February 1917. We bought this sword from his family. The photo (original not included) is of him with this sword. No maker’s / retailer’s details on blade which is typical of this late war period when production was important, fine detail not so.
The 35 1/2 inch blade has been replated, so the etching is places is feint but visible, and is in good condition (some small specs of plating loss / rust), firm in the hilt. The hilt / bowl guard are very good. The black fishskin grip and twisted wire bindings are good but with some wear. The original leather sword knot is aged but quite good / sound. The field service leather scabbard is worn but good except for the drag / chape being absent; reportedly a period occurrence. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Very nice example and with provenance. Bargain! £700. Please quote item reference ZY69. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1924 115 x 17 x 17 (2.411).
