Serial number 56826 for early to mid 1919 (just post WW1); the Wilkinson sales record unfortunately is blank for that serial number. The blade with the owner officer’s initials “C. S. S.” etched to it, so researching the Navy List for 1920 looking for an officer with those initials, likely just commissioned, may well yield their identity.
The well etched 32 inch blade is in very good condition but for a few small patina / light pitting patches and old storage grease (can be removed with white spirit), and firm in the hilt. The brass hilt / guard is good and the folding guard section works well / locates onto the securing pin of the scabbard as it should. The fishskin grip and twisted grip wire bindings are very good. The original sword knot is a bit frayed in places (around the clasps) and dull / grubby, but sound and good for over 100 years old. The leather scabbard with brass fittings is a little aged but good; a small leather dent towards the chape. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Great sword with research potential. £550 to you! Please quote item reference ZY56. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1922 100 x 15 x 16 (1.569).
