Circa 1800; maybe a midshipman’s but most likely a more senior officer’s dirk. Most likely the blade was made in Solingen, as most circa 1800 blades of this “flattened diamond” type were, with the “furniture” (fittings) crafted by an English cutler. Likely to be a Battle of Traflgar era Napoleonic British Royal Naval officer’s (or midshipman’s) dirk but it might have been a merchant officer’s bladed weapon.
The ivory submission reference (registration number) will be provided to the purchaser.
The 5 1/2 inch / 14cm blade is aged but good, and firm in the hilt and grip. The gilt brass hilt with inverted cup guard with scalloped edge and ‘greek key’ band is in good condition. The turned ivory grip has normal age slight yellowing, but is good. The brass scabbard with two suspension rings is aged with patina but good. The dirk sheathes and draws well.
