Imperial French Heavy Cavalry Cuirassier Regiments converted most, but not all troopers swords from clipped to spear point just before the Battle of Waterloo (loss of a fraction of an inch length in return for better piercing); this one has a scarce original clipped point. Almost certainly a Waterloo battlefield pick up as the scabbard is the then latest type and has a different rack / serial number to that of the hilt; swords were later picked up where they fell and married to a suitable lonely scabbard. No post Waterloo markings, so the sword did not stay in French service (the scabbard and hilt serial numbers would have been corrected if it did, plus likely a new 1816 model hilt and / or new grip with more ring binding turns) fitted.
The blade’s spine is correctly inscribed “Mfure Impale du Klingenthal Octobre 1813” with the correct poinçons (inspection stamps) for Krantz, Bick and Lobstein.

The almighty double fullered straight 38 1/4 inch blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The heavy brass three bar guard / hilt is very good, some minor scrapes, nothing much. The grip is in poor condition, but original; the wood base and twine that forms the leather grip groves is there and sound, so maybe a job for a skilled leather worker to replace the leather (some people would, others would not)? The steel scabbard is in good condition. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Clipped point! Waterloo?! What a collector’s dream, and just was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference ZY16. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1837 120x14x14 (3.060).
