The “Gothic” hilt has a folding guard section and the blade is fullered, so an 1845 pattern (1845 to 1854). Brass rather than steel or leather scabbard, so a senior officer. The blade has a modified (possibly broken – it appears to be deliberate, to make it more adept at piercing through thick military overcoats) point and several nicks to the cutting edge, so quite possibly a sword that has seen action, maybe the Crimean War (1853-1856).
The 31 inch blade is in good condition (modified point and some nicks to the cutting edge excepted), etched to Linney (military tailors and outfitters) of London on the ricasso, firm in the hilt. The brass hilt / guard with VR cypher to the cartouche has some distortion as is typical and to be expected due to the softer though more attractive facets of brass as opposed to steel; the folding guard section works well enough still. The brass scabbard is good but has a few dings / dents and age (brown tarnish). The sword sheathes and draws well.
Interesting / evocative example at a good low price, was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference ZY05. Further / full sized photos available upon request. Box 1811-116x14x12 (1.172)
