Marked “Talabot Paris” to the blade’s forte, these foot artillery swords were not used as weapons but as machetes to clear the ground for their artillery pieces / canons. Named by the French artillery service men that used them as “coupe-chou” (“Cabbage Choppers”), though often now used as Champagne swords to showingly remove the cork from a bottle of bubbly. This example has a couple of likely period nicks to the cutting edges so was used presumably against plants, not people!

The 19 1/8 inch blade is in good condition, save for a few nicks, and firm in the hilt. The one piece brass hilt / guard and ribbed grip are good, save for some age and wear. The leather and brass fittings scabbard is good; some creasing / scuffs / age etc. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Nice example, nicer price: £300. Please quote item reference ZX69. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 2045 70 x 14 x 14 (2.245).
