Lt Philip A. Nedwill died on the 29th May 1941 when his Walrus aircraft crashed while attempting to deliver a message to HMS Renown Read here and here).
The group photo is of British (HMS Emerald) and Italian Officers at the grave of Col. A. R. Dunn, V.C., 27th June, 1938, in Abyssinia; Nedwell (then a midshipman) is the person on the far right.

The 31 inch blade is in good condition, minimal wear / patina patches, firm in the hilt. The gilt brass hilt / guard is in very good condition save for a tiny ding to the knuckle bow. The white fishskin grip is good, a little grubby in places; the twisted grip wire bindings are good, a few turns of one minor strand are a tiny bit wayward, commensurate with general wear. The sword knot is a little aged etc. but good for age. The leather and brass scabbard has some wear but is good. The sword sheathes and draws well; the folding guard section of the hilt (with the officer’s name engraved to it) works well. The tan leather carry bag has age and a tear to the hood section (with the officer’s initials) but is otherwise sound and has a roeskin inner cover still intact.
Very nice set indeed and at a comparitive bargain of a price; £700. Please quote item reference ZX56. Further / full sized photos available upon request. Box 2046 100 x 16 x 15 (1.83).
