Marked to maker Ernst Busch of Solingen to the blade’s forte and dated 1915 to the spine, this is an iconic World War One Prussian / German model 1852 Hussars / Dragoons Cavalry Trooper’s Sabre (saber) / Sword. Though, most cavalrymen in WW1 manned machine guns and ate their horses during the conflict, if they survived (machine gunners and officers were the sniper’s first choice of targets for obvious reasons).
The 33 1/2 inch pipe back blade has some patina patches around the forte but is otherwise in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The sensational wide bar swept guard is good but with a steady light (black patina) rust speckling throughout; the leather thumb grip loop is aged but sound. The fishskin grip has age / fading but is good; the associated white metal twisted grip wire bindings are also good. The steel scabbard with patina / light inert rust speckling to match the guard / hilt is good; the sabre sheathes and draws well.
