A few Honourable Artillery Company officers wanted a sword fit for the battleground and one that conveyed elitism; this 1854 Guards pattern with HAC motto (Arma Pacis Fulcra) and emblem (a Shield of Arms, helm, mantling and crest with as supporters a Pikeman and a Musketeer) etchings did just that. The flaming bomb hilt / guard easily confused with that of the Grenadier Guards, but look closely for subtle differences and “HAC”. The blade never sharpened, so it was about prestige, not least it was made by arguably the finest sword maker of the time, Thurkle. In fact, this sword seems never to have been drawn that often, such is the outstanding condition of the blade.
The 32 1/2 inch blade is in near, almost as new condition, and is firm in the hilt. The steel hilt has suffered the test of time with some light rust pitting and patina, but is still good. The fishskin grip with a little age / wear is still very good, as are the associated twisted grip wire bindings. The scabbard as with the hilt, some age, light rust, etc. is still good. The sword sheathes and draws very well.
Superb blade condition, superb quality, scarce sword pattern complete with HAC emblems etched to the blade. Come on, at was £? (too late, now sold) this is a bargain if not a steal. Please quote item reference Z44. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1567-golf (1.957).
