American War of Independence / Revolutionary War era. This British 1751 pattern Infantry Hanger / Sidearm / Sword has had its blade broken and period repaired. It quite likely saw service in America, was repaired and then passed down / issued to a volunteer in the Lonsdale Local Militia (Lancaster) in 1808 when that militia was formed (hence the guard markings LLM B 2, for 2nd Battalion, weapon 2). The blade repair is one of many on these swords which were derided by the men that used them as being too frail.
The 24 1/2 inch period repaired blade is in aged but good condition and firm in the hilt. The brass hilt / guard is good, some minor bending to the main back piece bar and the quillon is missing (typical of these swords that had seen action). The spiral brass grip is good.
Lovely bit of history as a fair price, was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference Z38. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1558-81x17x16 (1.593).
