Serial number 6273; unfortunately the Wilkinson Sword sales ledger does not provide an officer’s name, just the finishing date of September 18th 1855. The Wilkinson logo and proof slug are hidden by the langets but exist of course.
The 30 3/4 inch blade is in good condition, some crazing effect very light pitting here and there, some scuffing looking light pitting near the point, some small patina patches, but overall very good for its age and firm in the hilt. The hilt is good. The grip sections are very good with minimal age cracking and the little stud inserts present. The later sword knot is very good. The original leather and brass fittings scabbard remarkably good for its age, though the brass fittings have lost almost all of their original gilt finish. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Truly, well above average condition for a well above average mameluke. Really, a Crimean War Wilkinson general’s mameluke for just was £? (too late, now sold)? We must be mad! Please quote item reference Y88. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1494-117x15x14 (1.848).
