Unmarked, so a private purchase. British made as these were not copied by other sword makers in other countries (Prussia for example). No make marks so possibly made for a privateer or other party the maker did not want to be held to account over. These cutlasses were also issued as “hangers” (short swords) to British field army hospital workers to ensure any captured inured prisoners did not cause trouble (as this has no British army markings, this is not a hospital worker’s hanger). But, for sure, an authentic 1800’s cutlass.
The 23 1/8 inch blade is in good condition and firm in the hilt, though the grip has a little movement. The brass hilt in very good condition (most have been damaged as brass is not a tough metal). The grip with some wear is good.
