The Running Fox mark is heavily debated but basically falls into 3 camps; a) it is a famed Shotley Bridge mark, b) the mark of Samuel Harvey (reputed Birmingham maker), c) it is a mid to late 18C Birmingham mark used by several makers. We are sure it is b), the mark of maker Samuel Harvey. What is in no doubt is that this “Strap Hilt” cutlass dates to the time of Australian Botany Bay’s exploration and settlement, and that this mark is highly prized by collectors.
The 26 1/4 inch blade has a deep aged steady patina throughout, is both in good condition and firm in the hilt. The strap hilt / guard and wooden grip are in good condition; the guard with remnants of its original black preserving paint, the grip with a few worm holes (no extra charge!).
A rare collector’s dream of a cutlass, especially at the dreamy price of was £? (too late, now sold) – don’t let this chance turn into a nightmare by allowing someone else to beat you to it.
