This 1811 Kavarlierresäbel / Bluchersabel sword has had a long service life, attested to by the many markings and the fact the blade was replaced in 1883, nearly 70 years after the sword first saw service. We know this as the hilt / guard and upper scabbard suspension band have (matching) original Napoleonic era “901D” weapon number markings, while the blade’s spine has a W Crown over 83 stamp for 1883. There are some early regimental markings but there was no uniformity with German markings for a long time, plus, often, regimental markings would be troop letter and trooper / weapon number only. So, we can only really tell you the “901D” markings are worthy of investigation / research maybe and that the later markings are for regional cavalry and ammunition trains. Modeled after the British 1796P, the Blucher M1811 is well worth owning as it is much more solid, and heavier.
The 32 1/2 inch blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The blackened hilt / guard is very good for its age. The grip is good but age / wear is seeing a gap between it and the backpiece towards the pommel. The heavy steel scabbard is good for age. The saber sheathes and draws well.
Impressive sword, to say the least, with a clear long service history. Just was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference Y61. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1463-117x15x14 (3.145).
