Serial number 48028 for 1914/1915, a very good World War One British Royal Artillery Officer’s Wilkinson Sword, Scabbard & Knot. The Wilkinson sales ledger has a gap for most of WW1 so, unfortunately, the original officer owner’s name can not be researched.
The 35 1/8 inch blade is in very good condition considering it is a true antique (over 100 years old) and has been kept in its original leather field service scabbard (these tend to draw and retain humidity / moisture to the detriment of the blades). Blade has been period sharpened and is firm in the hilt. The plated steel hilt good but with some age / tarnish / tiny rust spots. The original sword knot aged and dry with wear / cracks but sound. The fishskin grip in good condition. The twisted grip wire bindings are good but a lesser strand is missing on the top most turn and lesser strands a little wayward one side for two turns. The leather scabbard with some age and distinctive field condition wear. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Not a dress sword, that is for sure! Well above average condition. Collectors should fight over this one at just was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference X99. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1397-122x14x14 (1.999).
