Arthur Edward Harbord served as second officer and navigator, later chief officer on Nimrod, the British Antarctic Expedition vessel, 1907-1909 (leader Ernest Henry Shackleton), for which he received the Polar Medal. This sword has full provenance; it was sold with two other lots, all the former property of Cmdr A E Hardbord, RN (copies thereof provided to buyer). Commander Hardbord served throughout WW1 and WW2.
The 31 inch blade is in generally very good condition with the etching very clear; some patina patches and there is a slight wriggle in the tip end of the blade. Blade firm in the hilt. The hilt generally very good, some tarnish. The fishskin grip and twisted grip wire bindings are very good. The leather and metal scabbard in good condition for its age. The folding guard locates onto the scabbard retaining pin with a little persuasion. The sword sheathes and draws well. The sword knot is aged and the cord has broken.
