These junior officer swords with distinctive black rayskin grips are considerably scarcer than normal white fishskin more senior officer swords. Sometimes used by Master-at-Arms but more frequently midshipman / second lieutenants. This one has no maker’s / retailer’s name to the ricasso, though is clearly from a quality maker, which indicates mid to late World War One or a smaller retailer with no name etching provision with the maker.
The 31 5/8 inch well / grey etched blade is in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The hilt very good for age. Black rayskin grip and associated twisted grip wire bindings all present and correct. Sword knot aged and frayed in places but sound. Leather and brass fittings scabbard good but has a floppy kink just below the center band / lower suspension loop. Sword sheathes and draws well. Folding section of hilt / guard locates onto scabbard retaining pin OK but the spring is weak and it does not stay in lock position.
Hard to believe this is an antique. Lovely sword, well above average condition. Yours for was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference X10. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1238-102x18x16 (1.971).
