The ricasso etched to Hawkes & Co, this name / style (no “Ltd”) dates the sword to pre-1890. Serial number 4454.
The 35 inch blade is in good condition, the etching still vivid, some light pitting and wear but not much. Blade firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard with minimal distortion, having lost most of its period chemical browning. The fishskin grip has faded and has wear / some shrinkage but is overall good. The silver metal fine twisted grip wire bindings are all present and correct. The steel scabbard has some tiny scuffs and rust spots but not much / many, and is well above average. The sword sheathes and draws a bit loosely, so the internal wooden slats have gone.
A genuinely nice, quality, above average example. Well priced at only was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference number X06. Further / full sized pictures available upon request. Box 1234-121x18x16 (2.447)
