Mid Victorian Rifle Volunteers Officer's
Sword, De Burgh / Burke, for sale
In very good condition, a superb Mid Victorian Rifle Volunteers
Officer's Sword, with De Burgh / Burke family crest.
The blade etched with one of the many De
Burgh / Burke family crests / coats of arms, and bearing the
original owner / officer's initials "W B R". Blade etched
at ricasso to Busain & Co, Gerrard Street, Soho Square, London,
who traded there until 1858. So the original owner could well be
identified based on the above. The
De Burgh family were highly important and are equally interesting,
their coat of arms unmistakable as it bears the archaic French motto
"Ung Roy Ung Foy Ung Loy" (one king, one faith, one law).
The 32 1/2 inch blade is in exceptionally good condition for its
age, some staining etc. but not much. Blade firm in the hilt. The
three bar hilt / guard is very good, as are the black fishskin grip
and twisted grip wire bindings. The steel field service scabbard
is good. The sword sheathes and draws very well.
Hard to believe this sword is over 160 years old. Plenty of research
potential. A cracker for just £550. Please quote item reference
number W95. Further / full sized pictures available upon request.
