Marked to the 12th Lancers inside the guard and dated to January 1900, this sword is still sharp and would have seen very active service in the Boer War. In fact, the very tip is slightly (impact) bent, likely to be some poor Boer's legacy. The scabbard is correct, but a later marriage, marked to the Royal Field Artillery with no evident mutual markings with the sword to indicate it was married while still in service; most likely an end of service stores marriage.

The 33 3/8 inch blade has a patchy plus some crazed effect patina throughout, the later probably due to stress lines from an impact. Blade firm in hilt. The hilt / guard has bends / distortion commensurate with an active service life. The grip with wear, again in keeping with an active history. The scabbard in good shape generally. The sword sheathes and draws well. Sword marked to "EFD" (Enfield arms factory).

Rare to get a sword that has clearly been in the thick of battle. A really great buy for £600. Please quote item reference number W45. Further / full sized pictures available upon request. Box 1176-121x19x16 (2.997).
