Mid Victorian British Royal Navy Officer's
Sword, sold |
In very good condition for its age, a Mid Victorian British Royal
Navy Officer's Sword.

Etched at the ricasso to "Whiteman outfitter Woolwich"
and engraved to the top scabbard locket "Whiteman Powis Street
Woolwich", the sword almost certainly made by Prosser and pre-1880
(as there is no locking pin system to the scabbard / hilt). There
were two Whitemans operating as outfitters in Woolwich at the time;
we believe the outfitter in this case was William H Whiteman.

The 29 inch blade is in very good condition with very sharp quality
etching and minimal patina (inert black rust patches) which are
mostly to the edge. Blade firm in the hilt. The hilt very good and
the folding section works well. The fishskin grip in very good condition,
as are the twisted grip wire bindings. The leather of the scabbard
has crazed cracked and shrunk a little with the result the sword
does not sheath fully (there is a small gap).
A great sword in great condition at a great price: £? (too
late, now sold). Please quote item reference number W31 (1159).
