Etched (partly removed by sharpening) “Hebbert & Co, 8 Pall Mall East, London”, dating this rare top catch / latch sword from 1830 to 1864. Unlike most police sword which have side button release catch / latch systems, this one has it on the top of the blade.
The 23 inch blade is in good condition but with some patina black rust patches, has been period sharpened and sports a few ominous nicks to the cutting edge. Blade firm in the hilt. The hilt good, as is the fishskin grip though the later had wear one side. The leather and brass fittings scabbard is good for its age and the locking pin catch / latch system works well. The sword sheathes and draws well. The leather frog is in sound condition.
Top latch / catch police swords are rare and we probably have this well under prices at was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference number V81. Further / full sized pictures available upon request. Box 1069-102x19x17 (1.845).
