1857 Pattern Victorian British Royal Engineers
Officer's Sword, for sale
In fair condition, a scarce 1857 Pattern Victorian British Royal
Engineers Officer's Sword, etched to sword cutlers Landon &
The ricasso etched "Landon & Morland 77 St Jermyn St London
(Saint Jermyn Street)" which pretty much dates the blade to
1848 to 1856 / the sword to 1857; the blade may have been mounted
into an 1854 infantry officer's hilt initially.
The 32 inch blade is in very good condition with etching still crisp
but the thin proof slug is gone. Blade firm in the hilt. The brass
hilt has suffered some bending / denting as these hilts are prone,
brass being much softer than steel. The fishskin grip has some wear
/ loss patches and the twisted brass grip wire is not complete.
The steel scabbard, which denotes field service use is good but
some minor dings. The sword sheathes and draws well. This field
officer's sword has clearly seen a fairly harsh field service life
which you either like or do not.
Good example with clear history. Nicely priced at £525. Please
