French 1855 Model Infantry Superior Officer's
In good overall condition, a French 1855 Model Infantry Superior
Signed simply "M P" to the spine; there were several
fourbisseurs (sword cutlers / makers) beginning "M" in
Paris, so we are not sure which one made this sword. It is an 1855
model courtesy of the single suspension loop and a superior officer
model courtesy of the true double fullered blade. But this sword
was either issued or bought by the officer through a military supply
source as it has matching serial numbers (9476) to the hilt and
scabbard. The "S" to the hilt may well denote "Superior".
29 3/4 Inch blade in very good condition and firm in the hilt.
The hilt is in very good condition with plenty of gilt remaining.
The walnut grip has a couple of very small chips but is very good,
as is the twisted grip wire binding. The steel scabbard is very
good but for a few minor dings. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A great, well above average example for just £? (too late,
now sold). Please quote item reference V13 (0954). Further / full
sized photos available upon request.
