Victorian Warwickshire Yeomanry Cavalry Presentation
Sword, for sale
In good overall condition, an 1869 Dated Victorian British Warwickshire
Yeomanry Cavalry Presentation Sword.
Etched "Prize sword 1869. Presented by the Earl of Warwick
to Private John Glover 3rd Troop Warwickshire Yeomanry Cavalry.".
John Glover was otherwise a driver with the London and South Western
Railway, married to Charlotte Glover (nee Hambridge), whose son,
Stanley Glover (born 1884), was killed in action on the 2nd July
1916 in WW1.
The 34 3/8 inch blade is in good condition but with a steady patina
throughout, firm in the hilt. Hilt good but with age / patina. Fishskin
grip good (some wear), as are the twisted grip wire bindings. The
steel scabbard with some age but good. The sword sheathes well until
the last 3/4 inch and then sticks. The scabbard is original and
correct for the sword so something has perhaps got into the scabbard.
It may well be with multiple sheathings the fit would become better.
A great sword with research potential and all at a very nice low
price, £550. Please quote reference U95. Further / full sized
images available upon request. Box 0931-121x18x18 (2.313).
