1788P British Light Cavalry Sabre / Sword
by Woolley & Co, For Sale
In good overall condition, a 1788 Pattern British Light Cavalry
Sabre / Sword by Woolley & Co.
Woolley traded as "Woolley & Co" from 1790, so this
sword likely dates from then until 1796 when the pattern was replaced
by the 1796P.
The 32 1/8 inch period sharpened blade is in very good condition,
a couple of very small nicks to the forward cutting edge. Blade
firm in the hilt. The hilt in very good order for its age. The fishskin
grip has suffered the test of time and has losses; it may be possible
to replace the entire fishskin. The heavy steel scabbard in very
good condition for its age. The sword sheathes and draws very well.
There are no markings besides the maker's name, so likely a regimental
purchase (not Board of Ordnance / War Department) for a sergeant
(given the grip is fishskin, not leather).
A highly impressive and well made sabre, scarce too. A great piece
of history for just £1000. Please quote item reference u94.
