Etched to Gieves, Matthews and Seagrove Ltd, London, Portsmouth and Devonport, which means the dirk was made by Wilkinson Sword circa 1911. With the officer's initials, "P H G J" engraved to the top scabbard locket, researchers, here is the perfect research project! Who knows, this may have belonged to an important officer.

The 17 7/8 inch blade has some corrosion but most of the etching is untouched and clear. Blade firm in the hilt. The hilt in good condition, some gilt remaining. The fishskin grip a little grubby but good, as are the twisted grip wire bindings. The original dirk / sword knot, a huge bonus, is a little grubby and frayed but actually in good order, well above average. The leather and brass fittings scabbard is in good condition. The dirk sheathes and draws well, the locking pin works well and locates / locks into the hilt as it should.

A real nice WW1 era dirk, well above average and with research potential. Great price too; £650. Please quote item reference U78. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 0915-81x16x17 (1.215).
