Victorian British Westmoreland Rifle Officer's
Sword, For Sale
In good condition, a Victorian British Westmoreland / Westmorland
(Cumbria) Rifle Officer's Sword.
Now part of the County of Cumbria, Westmoreland (now Westmorland)
is part of the Lake District in North West England. The blade has
no maker's or retailer's mark etched to the ricasso, so it was probably
bought from a small local tailors / outfitters, sourced from a maker
in Sheffield (given the etching style) most likely (small outfitters
sold swords made by makers but could not afford / justify their
own template for the retailer's name area of the blade).
The 32 1/4 inch inch blade is in very good condition with just a
few minor patina patches, and is firm in the hilt. The steel hilt
has more patina but remains in good condition. The fishskin grip
with some wear but still good, as are the twisted grip wire bindings.
Steel scabbard with patina / inert rust patches but good. The sword
sheathes and draws loosely so the wooden lining slats have gone.
Nice rare Westmorleland sword at a nice price; £550. Please

upon request. Box 0909-1m (2.112).
