Claymore bladed RN officer are scarcer than the regular fullered blades of the Victorian period because, although being more fashionable / desirable, they were more expensive for the officers to buy. So Claymore bladed Royal Navy officer swords tend to have been bought by more influential / affluent officers. This one has a little blue brass oxidation / tarnish but it would clean up / off with a brush and cleaner if desired.
The 30 3/4 inch blade is in good condition, etching still clear, but with some patina / light pitting patches; not many and mostly away from the etching areas. The blade is firm in the hilt. The hilt generally good, the white fishskin grip is in good order but with some age / wear. The twisted grip wire looks good but may have a lesser strand missing one side of the main strand; it is hard to tell. The leather and metal fittings scabbard has some age crazing and a kink to the leather in the lowest section. The sword sheathes and draws well but the top fitting has to raise above its original line to allow the folding guard section to locate onto the retaining pin; this is either because of leather shrinkage or a minor internal obstruction towards the chape / drag.
