The Norfolk Hussars

The Norfolk Yeomanry can trace its history back to 1782 when Lord Townsend raised the Norfolk Rangers at Raynham Hall as 'a very respectable body of gentlemen, farmers and tradesmen'.

Sadly the Yeomanry Cavalry in Norfolk does not have a continuous history having been disbanded and reformed on several occasions. The present Yeomanry can trace its origins back to 1902 when Edward VII raised the Kings Own Royal Regiment Norfolk Yeomanry at Sandringham. Many of the forming members were Norfolk men who were at the time serving with the Suffolk Hussars!

The Norfolk Yeomanry fought in the First World War at Gallipoli and Egypt, finishing the war in Palestine as Infantry. Between the wars, the Norfolk Yeomanry was amalgamated with the Suffolk Hussars, until 1938 when, with the threat of war imminent, two Regiments were again raised, one in each county.
The Norfolk Yeomanry became the 65th (Norfolk Yeomanry) Anti Tank Regiment Royal Artillery and saw distinguished service in the desert and Italy, until being returned home to take part in the D-Day landings, finishing the war in the city of Kiel.

After the war the Norfolk Yeomanry were re-equipped with Bofors L40/70 guns (click here) as a Light Anti Aircraft Regiment. In 1960 the regiment joined the Suffolk Hussars (click here) as 308 (Suffolk and Norfolk) Field Regiment Royal Artillery, equipped with 25 Pdr field guns.
