The 18th Royal Hussars

The 18th were raised as Hussars in 1858, on the accession of George V the Royal title of "Queen Mary's Own" was granted in 1910.On 4 July 1901 at Springbok Laagte, during the South African War (Boer War) Private Crandon of the 18th Royal Hussar's (Queen Mary's Own) rode back to help another private who was wounded and whose horse became disabled. Private Crandon gave up his horse to the wounded man so that he could reach shelter, and followed on foot, having to run 1,100 yards, all the time under fire. He was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery.

The Regiment was known as the following at the following times:

1858 - 18th Regiment of (Light) Dragoons
1861 - 18th Hussar's
1903 - 18th (Prince of Wales Own) Hussar's
1905 - 18th (Victoria Mary, Princess of Wale's Own) Hussar's
1910 - 18th (Queen Mary's Own) Hussar's
1919 - 18th (Queen Mary's Own) Royal Hussar's
1921 - 18th Royal Hussar's (Queen Mary's Own)
In 1922 the 18th Hussar's (Queen Mary's Own) amalgamated with the 13th Hussars to form the 13th/18th Hussar's.

The 18th cavalry Regiment was raised in Leeds in the Year 1898. There had previously been two Corps of 18th Dragoons, one raised in 1759  which became the 17th in 1763 and is now the 17th (Duke of Cambridge's Own) Lancer's.  The second Regiment of 18th was disbanded. The present Regiment was given the title of 18th (Queen Mary's Own) Hussar's in 1910 and is at present styled 18th (Queen Mary's Own) Hussar's. There motto: "Fro Rege, pro Lege, Pro Fatria cocaesor" ("We strive for King, for Law, For Country").
