Worthwhile amounts of blue and gilt etch remaining and a fairly scarce sword, this French m1821 Infantry Officer’s has the original cutler’s / maker’s / fournisseur’s name to the forte one side of the blade. True, much of the original leather grip has perished away under the twisted grip wire bindings, which remain in place, exposing the blackened wood grip base underneath; a possible project for hobbyists!
The curved 28 3/4 inch blade is in good but aged / worn condition and firm in the hilt. The gilt hilt’s secondary bar to the guard is a little bent inwards but otherwise is in good condition. Much of the grip leather has gone but the twisted grip wire bindings remain, as does the wood grip base. The leather and brass scabbard is a tad aged with some dry shrikage, but is overall good for a leather scabbard around 200 years old. The sword sheathes and draws pretty well except for the last few inches which are tight.
Very attractive scarce sword at a fair atrractive price, was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AI21. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1940 97 x 15 x 16 (2.018).
