With Knights Head trademark of W.R. Kirschbaum (Solingen maker); many if not most 1853 pattern swords were made outside Britain. “B” bend test nark to the blade’s spine, plus an early Crown over 7 (no middle letter) inspection / view mark, shows this to be one of the first 1853P’s. The “V RB YC B 33” to the guard means “Volunteer Royal Berkshire Yeomanry Cavalry, Troop B, Weapon 33”.
The 35 inch plain fullered slightly curved blade is in good condition (some light pitting patches) and firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard is good but has extensive medium pitting patches. The composite grip is aged and bowing in places but sound. The steel scabbard like the hilt has pitting age but is still good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
