This An XI light cavalry sabre was made around 1804 by reference to the blade’s poinçon inspection stamps and early “Mfture imple de Klingenthal Coulaux frères Entrep rs” blade spine inscription. This sword has certainly seen action with multiple old nicks to the blade’s cutting edge and Russian (Cyrillic) capture marks showing it was present during the failed Invasion of Russia in 1812; quite how it then left Russian service, we can only speculate. Grip with clear wear and has lost one of its “olives”. If you want a pristine An XI, this one is not for you. If you want one that has been used in battle, probably many times, this is a beauty. Guaranteed authentic.
The 34 1/2 inch blade is good for age and harsh service life but has many nicks to the cutting edge, firm in the hilt. The brass hilt / guard is a bit dented and bashed, even cut in places, but is sound and good. The leather grip is very worn but sound, a couple of small patches of loss, one grip olive absent. The heavy steel scabbard is good but has some steady light to medium pitting throughout. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Hold and imagine what action it was involved in, and what happened to the trooper(s) who once held it. A truly evocative bargain, just was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AH54. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1815-121x19x16 (3.864)
