Such a rare etching to blade; “M M R (Midland Mounted Rifles) British Bechuanaland”. The Midland Mounted Rifles served in the Boer War and was famous for a disastrous attack when a division of their men were ambushed. Read about the British Bechuanaland here.
The owner / officer’s name “H H Cowie” etched to the blade would be none other than (Captain) Herbert Hugh Cowie.
Maker’s name “Hobson & Sons 1-3-5- Lexington St. London -W-” etched to the ricasso / forte.
The 32 1/4 inch supremely well etched blade some small inert rust / patina patches and wear but overall in very good condition and firm in the hilt. The 1897 pattern steel hilt with inert rust / patina freckles is still in good to very good condition. The black fishskin grip has some small “moth” missing patches, not too much and otherwise good. The twisted grip wire bindings have some wear but are good. The leather field service scabbard has age and scuffs but is still good. The sword sheathes and draws a little tightly, probably due to dry leather shrinkage.
