Post 1801 British Royal Coat of Arms (etched to blade) and period sharpened, so quite likely to have seen some service against Napoleon’s Grand Army, most likely during the Peninsular War. Although the 1796 pattern was officially replaced in 1803, the later was a curved bladed sabre and not to every officer’s liking, so many still carried the more elegant looking straight bladed 1796P long after it was officially superseded (many officers preferring to rely on pistols for close quarters combat).
The 32 inch well etched period sharpened blade is in great condition for its age, firm in the hilt; the grip a little loose. Hilt / guard with working folding section is generally very good. The silver metal grip is good; it is so rare for the twisted wore on these to come apart but this one is good. The scabbard shows its age and service life; the brass chape has gone (generic ones are available online) and the leather stitching has come apart but, besides that, it is fair for being over 200 years old. The sword sheathes and draws well.
