No brass proof slug to the forte / ricasso but “proved” to the blade’s spine shows this sword dates to around 1844 (proof slugs date from 1845 and the term “proved” predates that by only a few years; before it was “warranted”). This sword has a Victorian “VR” royal cypher etched to the blade and an early 19C style tablet makers panel to “Andrews 9 Pall Mall”. The blade has been period sharpened, so it was for more than just a dress / uniform item.
The 32 1/4 inch blade is overall very good for its age, some polished out small light pitting patches (nothing much), and is firm in the hilt and grip. The steel 3 bar guard / hilt is good but with light rust pitting / patina in the majority. The fishskin grip has some wear through patches (so called “moth holes”), especially under the pommel where some (a small section) of the base wood has also gone; a clear sign of being held / used in combat. The steel scabbard has some tell-tale mounted service use small dings towards the drag, plus a kink, but is otherwise sound / good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
If only this sword could speak of its past! A great evocative example at a bargain price of was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AH19. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1692-104x15x14 (1.534)
