Dated January 1945 to the obverse of the Nakago (tang), signed “Yasumitsu” (almost certainly Matsunaga Yasumitsu, a certified Rikugun Jumei Tosho smith who made Gendaito blades, as well as milled steel blades). The small round silver metal anchor mon on the Kabuto-gane (pommel) is said by many to denote a sword of the Imperial Japanese Special Naval Landing Forces, while others believe it to be a simple, possibly post-war embellishment. In any event, this is a good and authentic late WW2 shin gunto and worth more than our sales price below.
The 25 inch nagasa (cutting edge section measurement) blade is in good but polished condition looking clean but with wear / scuffs which show in the camera flash, some nicks. All firm. The tsuka (grip / hilt), etc. in good condition. The saya (scabbard) is good but the original paint gone / going / wearing in places. The sword sheathes and draws well. The locking catch mechanism works well and holds the saya in place when held vertically.
Very nice example at a particularly nice price: (was) £1500, now £1200 . Please quote item reference AG99. Further / full sized images available upon request. Triangle 1626-105x17x14 (2.344).
