No maker / retailer mark / blade etching for this Highland Infantry Officer’s sword, so likely one living up to the frugal no nonsense (without skimping on quality) image many Scotsmen had / have. This is a quality Scottish basket hilt broadsword.
The well etched 31 1/4 inch blade is a little worn / aged but in good condition and firm in the hilt (has pommel nut top to tighten / loosen to allow interchange with a cross hilt; not present). The steel hilt in good condition and would probably brighten and shine up with a good metal polish (e.g. Simichrome). The scarlet liner (with royal blue edging and ribbon) is in very good condition for its age etc. and a welcome inclusion. The red tassel still good. The fishskin grip with some wear is nonetheless very good for its age, as are the associated grip wire bindings. The plated steel scabbard is very good; again, some metal polish might well improve. The sword sheathes and draws well.
A lovely well above average example at a remarkably frugal price; was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AG90. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1572-125x17x17 (2.642).
