Blade engraved to Klingenthal January 1815, hilt to Versailles. This An XIII Cuirassier trooper’s sword was not likely at Waterloo, but is a post battle war trophy. Why? Because the blade still has the original (from factory) clipped point blade (most at Waterloo were regimentally converted / ground to be speaR pointed), no rack / serial numbers tot he hilt or scabbard and the scabbard has not been chemically browned. If you are a purest and want a 100% untouched original An XIII, here it is. If you want one that saw action at Waterloo, this one is not for you.
The sword was likely liberated from France as a war trophy. How do we know this? No post 1815 French markings, no revised 1816m hilt / guard. No increased grip turn number. That’s how.
The almighty 38 1/2 inch blade is in very good condition, some light pitting and wear around the forte but nothing much, and is firm in the hilt. The heavy / thick solid brass hilt / guard is in good shape. The original leather grip has some age and wear but is very good, as are the associated twisted grip wire bindings. The heavy steel scabbard is in very good condition. The sword sheathes and draws well.
