Made by Weyersberg, Kirschbaum & Co, retailed by G Colle of Cardiff, the blade retrospectively etched to “R Austin Neville”. We have searched the 1902 Hart’s Army List and can find no listing for him; researchers!
The following input / information has been gratefully received by us from a valued customer, John S;
I believe it is the sword of Lt. Col Richard Austin Nevill. DSO. He started out as an infantry officer before becoming an Engineers officer, he commanded the Carmarthen Field Company R.E in Gallipoli.
Richard Austin Nevill seems to have had an interesting life, DSO, Territorial Decoration, Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Mentioned in Dispatches
The 31 3/4 inch blade is well etched but has areas of wear and patina, firm in the hilt. The steel 1897 pattern hilt / guard in overall good condition. The quality black fishskin grip in good condition but with a small wear / moth hole one side; the twisted grip wire bindings are in good shape. The leather field service scabbard with age and wear is nonetheless good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
