This cutlass has had a long harsh service life. It is a RN cutlass courtesy of the crown over 11 view / acceptance mark. The “258” to the blade is a stores number, possibly a ship stores number, which means it was once on a large ship of the line and, who knows, maybe at the Battle of Trafalgar. Although there is an 1805 pattern TN cutlass and Trafalgar dates to that same year, most if not all cutlasses on HMS Victory and the other British fleet would have been this model.

The 28 3/8 inch sharpened blade has many knocks and scuffs but is still good, though it has some movement in the hilt, so the original internal wooden packing has gone. The figure of eight hilt / guard is aged but good, the pommel cover a little askew. The barrel grip has equal age and also is good.
A rare item, especially in such good condition. An evocative historical investment for was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AG48. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1441-92x17x15 (1.328).
