A standard Royal Navy officer’s sword engraved on the folding guard section to “J G Clarke RNR”, complete with original sword knot, scabbard and all weather cover / carry bag. You can read about John Garside Clarke’s WW2 naval career here.
The 31 1/2 inch grey etched blade has wear and some inert rust patches but is overall good and is firm in the hilt. The hilt is good and retains good amounts of gilt; the folding guard section works well and locates onto the scabbard securing pin. The white fishskin grip is good, the twisted grip wire bindings also but a couple of lesser strand turns are very slightly wayward. The original sword knot is sound to good, but a little aged / grubby. The leather and brass fittings scabbard is mostly good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
Nice sword, interesting officer, plenty of research potential. Can’t fault the price of was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AG38. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1400-117x15x15 (1.946).
