The Wilkinson sales ledger has confirmed that this is the commissioning officer’s sword of “Sidney Clive“, later Lieutenant-General Sir George Sidney Clive, GCVO KCB CMG DSO DL JP, and would have been with him through his distinguished early military career including The Sudan Campaign (Mahdist War) and 2nd Boer War, before he went to Staff College to become a General Staff Officer at The War Office. Hold the sword, imagine the conflicts it saw.

The 32 inch blade festooned with Grenadier Guards Battle Honours, his initials “G S C”, the Grenadier Guards badge and Victorian royal cypher, is in very good condition, some wear and patina but not too much, and is firm in the hilt. The hilt / guard with age and some rust patches mainly along the back piece but still good. The fishskin grip and associated grip wire bindings are worn but there and quite good. The leather and steel fittings field service scabbard has wear, particularly to the chape / drag, and light scuffing generally, but is good. The sword sheathes and draws well.
The sword of a very important and distinguished officer which was with him during famous conflicts; they do not get much better. Well worth the was £? (too late, now sold) price tag.
