Etched at the ricasso to Jolliffe & Sons Devonport, which thereby dates this sword from 1897 to 1901. The black fishskin grip means this sword was for a junior officer, a second lieutenant / midshipman; these junior officer swords are much scarcer than regular officer swords (with white fishskin).
The 31 1/2 inch blade is in very if not exceptionally good condition with just a few small patina spots and very little / virtually no wear. Blade firm in the hilt. The brass hilt does have tarnish but this can be cleaned off if desired. The black fishskin grip with a little wear but very good; the twisted grip wire bindings also very good. The leather and brass fittings scabbard very good for age. The sword needs to be sheathed vertically to sheath well, else it catches inside and then does not sheath fully easily, probably due to leather age shrinkage.
A great example and a really low price; was £? (too late, now sold). Please quote item reference AG02. Further / full sized images available upon request. Box 1307-102x19x16 (1.940).
